What goes inside an llms.txt file?
The convention is deliberately simple. A heading with your business name. A short summary in a quote block. Then sections listing your key pages with one-line descriptions: services, pricing, locations, contact. The whole file is plain Markdown that both humans and machines read easily.
AI systems that do fetch the file get your own words for what you do, instead of guessing from navigation menus and marketing slogans.
Where does the file live?
At the root of your domain, so it loads at yourbusiness.com/llms.txt. Placing it anywhere else defeats the purpose, because crawlers that check for it look at the root by convention, the same way they look for robots.txt.
Uploading it takes a minute through your hosting file manager or a message to your developer. Once live, open the URL in a browser to confirm it loads correctly. That confirms the file is accessible, not that every AI crawler is requesting it.
Does llms.txt actually improve AI visibility?
Server-log research in 2026 shows major AI crawlers rarely request this file directly, and Google has stated on record that its systems don't use it for ranking or AI Overviews. So llms.txt on its own is unlikely to change how ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google AI describe your brand.
Where it does help: giving AI coding tools and shopping agents a clean reference point, and giving your own team one accurate source of truth for what AI should say about you. Actual visibility still depends on your existing content, reviews, structured data, and where you're mentioned elsewhere, which is why measurement comes before optimization.
